Klubb Super 8: The Dark Side of World Cinema
A weekend filled with vampires from Pakistan, vengeful women from the Philippines and masked wrestlers from Mexico.
Far too long the concept "world cinema" has been associated with movies from non English speaking countries with titles connected with fruits and hardships. To broaden your horizons we have put together a programme you won't soon forget.
Klubb Super 8 + Mondo Macabro present: The Dark Side of World Cinema
Friday Oct. 30th
7 p.m. South Asian Horror and Zinda Laash (The Living Corpse, Pakistan 1967)
We open the festival with a documentary produced by Mondo Macabro about the rich horror traditons in, you guessed it, South Asia! Followed by the first Pakistani vampire film that shares so many traits with Dracula that both Universal and Bram Stoker's heirs would have felt uneasy on it's release had they only known about it!
Saturday Oct. 31st
1 p.m. Sangre de Virgenes (Blood of the Virgins, Argentine 1967)
An extremely groovy slice of vamp camp with go-go clubs, hippies and sassy chicks set in the swinging Argentine of the late 60's. Director Emilio Vieyra also gave us the classic The Curious Dr. Humpp. Those in the know have seen many similarities between this and many a Scooby Doo episode. You be the judge!
3 p.m. Peravang sisarang sindikat (Virgins From Hell, Philippines 1987)
Young ladies on motorbikes dressed in 80's fitness couture on a roaring rampage of revenge. They have their sights set on Mr Tiger, who murdered their parents, stole their land and earns his money through drugs and the slavetrade. The guy's got it coming, 'nuff said.
5 p.m. Pembalasan ratu pantai selatan (Lady Terminator, Indonesia 1989)
The tagline pretty much says it all: "She mates...Then she terminates!" In other words the going gets pretty rough when an ancient south sea queen inhabits the body of a young anthropology student and takes to the streets with a machine gun that never needs reloading.
Sunday Nov 1st
Serieteket (The Comic Book Library), Klubb Super 8 and Mondo Macabro celebrate
Dia de Los Muertos
1 p.m. Santo en la Venganza de Los Mujeres Vampiro (Santo in the Revenge of the Vampire Women, Mexico 1970)
The foremost of all the luchadores once again comes face to face with bloodthirsty women in a flick that has borrowed a trait or two from British Hammer Films. Back in the day this movie came as an early X-Mas gift for Mexican wrestling fans with a premiere on Christmas Eve.
3 p.m. Las Momias de Guanajuato (The Mumies of Guanajauto, Mexico 1972)
Blue demon, Mil Mascaras and Santo - all together! In this the most lucrative of all the lucha libre films the heroic trio square off against Old Nick himself, not to mention the undead. The success had many a producer jumping on the bandwagon and soon other luchadores enmascarados got to beat up on the dusty denizens of Guanajuato.
5 p.m. Alucarda, La Hija de Las Tinieblas (Alucarda, Daughter of Darkness, Mexico 1975)
A young girl is sent to a convent after losing her parents in an accident and his soon embroiled in problems of a demonic nature. Diabolic rites, vampirism and extremely wicked nuns directed by Juan Lopez Moctezuma, a great inspiration to Guillermo del Toro among others.
